Our First Blog

Welcome to our nifty new website and blog built by our friends - and new sponsor – Neon Cartel.

We’ve now published 8 weekly episodes of The Pub Test and have built and maintained a solid audience of followers. Some people have asked us why we started a podcast – particularly when every man, woman and their dog have started one. Well, we haven’t done it for the money – only Joe Rogan and select handful of others make money in podcasts. I guess it’s a bit of therapy for us – two blokes just having a chat about the events of the week – as you would in any front bar of Australia. We think we represent the thoughts and opinions of the common man/woman.

Mark Bickley and I (Dan Demaria) are or have both been working in the media so I guess we bring some bullshit-detection. We’re curious but we also have a healthy sense of cynicism. We aren’t credentialed investigative journalists – nor do we want to be – but we do want to ask the questions of the everyday man and woman as to whether decisions by those we elect, actions from companies we buy from and just the general events of the week Pass The Pub Test?

Pub Test: Australian term, often used by the media, to describe the collective opinion of the everyday Australians to the conduct and reputation of public figures such as elected officials and celebrities, or to current events. In many cases "the pub test" is a device employed by journalists to invoke the "temperature" of an issue among the general public, without actually engaging with members of the public. In other cases, journalists may canvas the patrons of a pub in order to elicit public opinion, while also providing a humorous flavour to their story by including quotes from or footage of inebriated patrons.

Example: The general consensus is that deputy prime minister's decision to leave his wife and children for a young woman on his staff, failed the 'pub test' among most Australians.
